Pour-Over Coffee Guide

Pour-over coffee is a classic brewing method that highlights the pure flavor notes of the coffee. It provides full control over the brewing process and is popular among coffee enthusiasts. Here is a simple step-by-step guide.

You will need:

✔ Pour-over dripper (Hario V60, Kalita Wave, or Chemex)
✔ Coffee filter (suited to your dripper)
✔ Freshly ground coffee (medium-coarse grind, like coarse sand)
✔ Water (preferably filtered)
✔ Gooseneck kettle (for better pouring control)
✔ Scale (for precise measurement)
✔ Timer (to keep track of time)

Ratio and temperature:

☕ Coffee: 15 g per 250 ml water (1:16.7 ratio)
💧 Water: 92-96 °C

Ingredients:

  • Coffee: 15-18 grams per 250 ml water (ratio can be adjusted to preference)
  • Water: 92-96 °C hot (not boiling)

How to brew:

1. Preparation

Weigh the coffee: Use a scale and measure your coffee (e.g., 15 g coffee for 250 ml water).

Heat the water: Boil it and let it rest for about 30 seconds if you don't have a thermometer.

2. Prepare the filter

Rinse the filter with hot water while it's in the dripper. This removes the paper taste and preheats the brewing equipment. Discard the rinse water.

3. Grind the coffee

Use a grinder and grind the coffee medium-coarse (like coarse sand). Freshly ground coffee provides the best flavor.

4. Setup

Place your dripper on a cup or carafe.

Pour the ground coffee into the filter and level the surface.

Place the cup + dripper on the scale and reset it.

5. Blooming (pre-brewing)

Pour a small amount of water (about twice the coffee amount, e.g., 30 g water for 15 g coffee) over the coffee.

Let it sit for 30-45 seconds to release carbon dioxide – it enhances the flavor.

6. The brewing process

Pour slowly in circular motions from the center outward.

Avoid pouring directly on the filter's edges.

Continue pouring in small increments until you've used all the water.

The entire brewing should take 3-4 minutes.

7. Adjustment (if necessary)

Going too fast? Grind the coffee finer.

🐢 Going too slow? Grind the coffee coarser.

8. Serving

Remove the dripper and the filter.
Stir the coffee to mix the aromas.

Enjoy your coffee!
